Hello, my name is Rachel Hugg and I am a Graphic Illustrator.
I have primarily worked as a in-house graphic illustrator for the last few years as well as pursuing various freelance opportunities. While I achieved my degree in 2019, my love and study of design dates back to around 2010 when I took my first design class in high school. You could say design and I clicked, literally!
Despite the instant connection, after high school, design took a back seat as I went on to join the U.S. Navy and worked several years as an Arabic linguist. That said, design was never fully in my rear view. I often found myself participating in design opportunities at work and taking on odd jobs from friends and colleagues. I also enjoyed creating lighthearted comics for peers in the workspace to boost morale and camaraderie when times were tough.
This continued driving interest pushed me to obtain my bachelor’s in Graphic and Media Arts and when my naval service came to a close in 2021, my design career began in earnest. Since then, I have had the privilege to work for as a contracted designer with a U.S. Army Brigade, as well as continuing independent ventures in both design and illustration. Most notable among those is a collaboration on a children’s book centered around dealing with childhood trauma, where I was asked to be the illustrator.
Outside of design, I enjoy spending time with my family in addition to reading and writing. I also participate in my local American Legion chapter and have been an active member of the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) since 2020 and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) since 2024.
